Voice of customer analysis for ad copy
Voice of customer analysis means reading what buyers say in their own words and finding what repeats. For ad copy, the goal is a short list of pains, desires and objections you can test, each backed by real quotes.

What voice of customer analysis is
Voice of customer (VoC) analysis is the work of collecting what customers say, sorting it into themes and ranking the themes by how often they come up.
Product and support teams use it to decide what to fix. For ads, the questions are narrower: what hurts, what people want instead, what stops them buying, and which exact words they use for each. Reviews, Reddit threads and comments under videos are good sources because people write them unprompted, often after they have paid.
The method in five steps
Collect, tag, cluster, turn the top clusters into angles and hooks, and keep the quote attached to every line.
- Collect. Pull reviews and comments from where your buyers talk: your own reviews, a competitor's reviews, Reddit threads and comments under popular videos. Low star reviews and complaint threads carry the objections.
- Tag. Mark each comment as a pain (a problem they have), a desire (the result they want) or an objection (a reason they hesitate or return the product). One comment can carry more than one tag.
- Cluster. Group tags that say the same thing in different words, and count the mentions in each group.
- Turn into angles and hooks. An angle is the argument for one cluster. A hook is the opening line, ideally in the customer's own phrasing.
- Keep the quote. Every angle should point to the comments that prove it, so anyone can check it and so you do not write claims nobody made.
A worked mini example
This example uses an invented brand, Northpaw, a dog harness, with invented comments and counts.
Say you collected 400 reviews of Northpaw and two competitors, plus two Reddit threads about dogs that pull. After tagging and clustering:
| Cluster | Type | Mentions | Sample quote (invented) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rubs under the front legs | Objection | 58 | "Left a bald patch behind his elbows after a week." |
| Still pulls | Pain | 44 | "My arm feels like it's coming off on every walk." |
| Easy to put on | Desire | 31 | "I want something I can clip on without a wrestling match." |
From that you get three angles to test: a no-rub fit (answer the top objection), calmer walks (the pain), and a harness that goes on in seconds (the desire). Hooks follow the quotes, for example "Does your harness leave a bald patch behind the elbows?" Before running any line, check that the product actually does what the angle says.
How Comment Downloader does each step
Comment Downloader collects the comments, writes the tagged and ranked report, and links every finding to its quote.
- Collect: the free Chrome extension reads every comment or review on the open page from 31 sources, including Amazon reviews, Reddit threads, TikTok and YouTube. Collecting in your browser is free and unlimited.
- Tag and cluster: the AI report counts what people say again and again and ranks pains, desires and objections, with mention counts.
- Angles and hooks: the report opens with ranked ideas to test, then angles, hooks, buyer segments and short UGC scripts. Compare puts your reviews next to a competitor's in one report.
- Keep the quote: each finding links to the quotes behind it, and each quote to the post it came from. Claim warnings flag lines such as health claims to check before you run them.
The free plan includes 5 AI reports a month. You can also run the whole method from Claude or ChatGPT with the MCP connector.
Mistakes that weaken VoC analysis
The common mistakes are reading too few comments, counting only your own reviews and losing the original words.
- Ten comments show you anecdotes, not patterns. Read enough to see what repeats.
- Your own five star reviews tell you what already works. Competitors' one and two star reviews tell you what buyers still want.
- Paraphrasing too early removes the phrases that make a hook sound like a person. Keep the exact words until the copy is written.
- A theme with a big count is not proof the product solves it. Check claims before you run them.
Questions
What is voice of customer analysis?
It is collecting what customers say in reviews, comments and forums, tagging it as pains, desires and objections, grouping similar remarks and ranking the groups by how often they come up.
How do you use voice of customer analysis for ad copy?
Take the most repeated pains, desires and objections, write one angle for each, and use the customers' own phrases as hooks. Keep the quotes linked to each angle so you can check every claim.
Where should VoC data come from?
From places buyers write unprompted: product reviews, app store reviews, Reddit threads and comments under videos. Include competitors' low star reviews, which show the objections your ads need to answer.
Can I do VoC analysis for free?
Comment Downloader's free plan includes unlimited collecting in your browser and 5 AI reports a month, each with findings linked to the real quotes. You can also export to CSV and tag comments by hand.
